High Museum of Art:
American artist Faith Ringgold (1930-2024) is widely known and celebrated for her paintings and multimedia art, including narrative quilts. However, her award-winning accomplishments as a children's book creator are less well known. The High in Atlanta presents the most comprehensive exhibition to date of original paintings and drawings made for more than a dozen of her children's books, featuring more than 100 works, including several that have never previously been exhibited. Together, the artworks in the exhibition illuminate critical aspects of Ringgold's practice and convey how Ringgold, a lifelong educator, presents children as creative, purposeful art makers. See it before it closes on Oct. 12.
Morris Museum of Art:
Music at the Morris: Chris Ndeti. Enjoy the dynamic musical talent of this singer-songwriter, one of the CSRA's most popular performers, at the Morris Museum of Art, Augusta.
Old Fort Jackson:
Old Fort Jackson is a National Historic Landmark in Savannah offering daily cannon firings and interactive programs for adults, kids, and families. It features historical weapons demonstrations and interactive programming for families. Daily cannon firings occur at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Pin Point Heritage Museum:
At the Pin Point Heritage Museum, located in the former A.S. Varn & Son Oyster and Crab Factory in Savannah, visitors can experience the Gullah/Geechee culture first hand. For nearly 100 years, the community of Pin Point was quietly isolated on the banks of the Moon River just south of Savannah. Now, you can explore the refurbished museum complex and experience multimedia presentations, exciting exhibits, and unparalleled views of the marsh.
Savannah Children's Museum:
Located within the Central of Georgia Railway Carpentry Shop, Savannah Children's Museum features over a dozen exhibits designed to expand the imaginations of children including an exploration maze, a reading nook, and a sensory garden.
Savannah History Museum:
Located in the former Central of Georgia Railway Passenger Depot, Savannah History Museum takes you on a journey through time from Savannah's earliest days to the present, with unique exhibits and interactive experiences for the family. Exhibits include an early 20th century steam locomotive, archaeological finds from Savannah's Revolutionary War history, and much more.
SCAD Museum of Art:
Michi Meko 'So Black and So Blue'
Michi Meko creates large-scale paintings that address and process "the African American experience of navigating public spaces, particularly in the American South, while remaining buoyant within them." The artist's powerful subject and impressive approach to making these works - on exhibit in Savannah - where brought about by a near-drowning, which shifted his perspective on how he exists in nature. While pursuits in the water or woods like fishing or hiking have historically been fraught for Black individuals, often restrictively codified as "white" spaces in the U.S., Meko's exuberant art and passion for fly-fishing reclaim these nonurban sites, demonstrating that nature has always been a thriving source for Black creative expression.
